Sofa With Storage UK — Is It Worth It and What Can You Actually Store?

Under-seat sofa storage solves one of the most persistent problems in UK homes: the living room that needs to function as a guest room, a storage space and a sitting room simultaneously. Storage in a sofa sounds like a minor feature until you live without it — then it becomes one of the most appreciated decisions in any furniture purchase. This guide covers how it works, what you can store, and whether it’s worth it for your household.
How Under-Seat Sofa Storage Works
All sofa storage at My Next Sofa uses a gas-lift mechanism. The entire seat platform — not just the cushions — lifts on two gas pistons, revealing the storage compartment beneath. The gas pistons hold the seat open without any support required, leaving both hands free to access the compartment.
The compartment runs the full width and depth of the sofa section. On a straight 3-seater sofa bed, this is typically 160×60×30 cm — approximately 290 litres of storage. On a corner sofa bed, there are two separate compartments: one beneath the straight section and one beneath the chaise, for a combined total of 180–220 litres depending on model dimensions.
What You Can Store
The compartment is sized for bedding — this is its primary purpose. A king-size duvet (13.5 tog standard fill) fits without compression. Two standard pillows, a fitted sheet and a flat sheet fit alongside it. There’s typically space for a spare blanket as well. Every item your guests need sleeps in the same sofa they’ll sleep in.
Beyond bedding, the compartment accommodates: throws and cushion covers not in current use, board games and children’s items, laptop bags and home office accessories you want out of sight but accessible, yoga mats and exercise equipment, seasonal items (Christmas lights, decorations) in the off-season.
What doesn’t work well: heavy items (the gas lift is not designed for weight over approximately 15 kg), very bulky items that exceed the compartment height (typically 28–32 cm), and anything that needs to be accessed frequently — the gas lift mechanism is smooth but not designed for multiple open-close cycles per day.
Storage vs No-Storage — Is It Worth the Premium?
At My Next Sofa, under-seat storage is included as standard on every model — there is no premium to pay. This is worth understanding because most UK sofa retailers charge £150–£300 to add storage as an option. Our position is that storage is a fundamental feature of a functional sofa bed, not an add-on.
For households where storage is not needed — perhaps because there’s a large utility room, dedicated linen storage or no guest sleeping requirement — the storage mechanism adds no cost and minimal mechanical complexity. There is no downside to having it.
Storage Capacity by Model
CAMDEN OPEN (200×142 cm): Two compartments — approximately 160 litres total. CARO (230×142 cm): Two compartments — approximately 185 litres total. NOTTING (235×145 cm): Two compartments — approximately 190 litres total. HARROW (305×200 cm): Two large compartments — approximately 260 litres total. CROYDON Modular (240×200 cm): Multiple modular compartments — approximately 220 litres total.
Maintaining the Storage Mechanism
The gas-lift mechanism requires minimal maintenance. Open and close it fully every 3–6 months to keep the pistons operating smoothly. Keep the compartment floor clean — vacuum periodically to prevent debris accumulating beneath the seat. If the mechanism loses its hold (the seat no longer stays open without support), the gas pistons can be replaced — contact us for the correct part for your model.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does every My Next Sofa sofa have storage? Yes — under-seat storage is included as standard on every model at no extra cost.
How much can I store in a corner sofa? 160–260 litres depending on model — enough for a full set of guest bedding plus additional items.
Is sofa storage as practical as a separate storage unit? For bedding specifically, yes — it’s more convenient because the bedding is in the same place as the bed. For general storage, a dedicated unit provides better access and organisation.
Will the storage mechanism affect sofa comfort? No — the seat platform sits on the gas pistons without any change to the seating surface above. HR foam cushions sit on top of the platform as normal.
